For me, it’s always personal. The couples who invite me into their lives to share in their wedding celebrations have asked me to document the most important day of their lives, which for me is a huge responsibility and truly an honor. Sometimes its even more personal. In this case I’ve known Sarah and her family since she was about ten, and to have been asked to photograph her wedding was for me about as terrific and meaningful as it gets.

So when we met at their fabulous sun-drenched NYC apartment, this most fabulous and fun-loving couple brought with them to the shoot not only their smiles, obvious mad about each other love for each other, but a real and larger than life and totally infectious joie de vivre. And of course hitting the streets of their neighborhood for our pictures was like setting us free in a fun zone. Every corner brought on a new adventure.

They’re getting married in September in Groton Long Point, on the Connecticut Shore Line(GLP to those in the know), one of Sarah’s favorite places in the world, and where she spent her summers growing up. A place where the two of them can share in all of those things that they love to do together from cooking to painting, hiking and riding bikes. A very special place to get married for a very special couple, and I can’t wait for that September day.

When Christine and Joe, whose wedding day is rapidly approaching, asked me if I might consider heading down to DC for their engagement photos, I didn’t have to think twice. While it’s a City I’ll admit to not having spent a lot of time in, my memories of my previous visits are both vivid and significant, and then when it occurred to me that Alyssa and Kevin, whose wedding on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee later this month, also happen to live in DC, my trip to the Capitol was sealed. But for starters, how can I not share with you this memorable photo that dad took of yours truly with mom and “sis”, on my first trip there. Priceless, wouldn’t you say? And check out the fancy camera around my neck.

But back to my more recent travels. And to start with, hitting the streets and sites with Christine and Joe, who actually no longer live in DC, but it seems just might have left their hearts there, although their current NYC home’s not such a bad second choice. With their upcoming weekend’s wedding in the chapel at Fordham U, followed by the reception at one of our favorites, The Country Club of Darien, I thank them for both the initial inspiration to make the trip as well as the fun tour of some of their old haunts. See you soon, C&J.

For Part Two of my day in DC (truth: it was actually the first part of my day), I connected with Alyssa and Kevin at the Washington Monument (pre-earthquake damage). Having photographed Alyssa’s sister Katherine’s wedding to Brian just a few years ago, and of course getting to know her very special family just a bit, I was honored to be invited to join them for their upcoming October wedding at The Inn at Church Landing, in Meredith, NH, close to where the family spends lots and lots of time. And what fun we had in our travels through the streets of DC, all just a warm up for their New England autumn celebration. Can’t wait, Alyssa and Kevin!

It was a foggy and misty day when Helen, Joe and I met at the beautiful Waveny Park in New Canaan this Spring for their engagement session. Because we’d already had to reschedule their photos a couple of times previously, the thought was, well let’s go for it. Sometimes those “go for it” decisions (in life and photography) are the best ones you can ever make. Rather than grey and dreary, the light was in fact soft and ethereal.
Well prepared with their choice of umbrella colors, Helen and Joe proved totally game for whatever the day would bring. Now if that isn’t a good start to a beautiful marriage, I don’t know what is.

Tomorrow being their wedding day, with their reception at The Inn at Longshore, and with a zero percent chance of rain, I thought there was no better time to share these photos, and to wish the two of them years and years of happiness, and just the right mix of sun-filled days with some fog thrown in for all of those great photo opps to follow. Looking forward to tomorrow’s exciting celebration.

As we all eagerly await Patricia and Alex’s rapidly approaching Connecticut June wedding, it strikes me that there’s something very Kate Middleton about Patricia. A certain classic elegance, natural beauty, and just as with the new Duchess of Cambridge, the camera does love her, I think you’ll agree. The twist in the story is that Alex, the man she’s about to marry is clearly more Harry than William, at least in appearance. And while London was not part of our game plan for our engagement session, the streets of Boston, where Patricia lives, sufficed quite nicely. From Beacon Hill to the Charles River, the Public Gardens to the steps of the State House, all a perfect backdrop for our day with the soon to be bride and groom.

She’s been playing tennis since she was 7 and competitively since she was 9. She held a New England ranking through her junior years and played # 1 single and doubles at Fairfield University, where she was captain of the team her junior and senior years. He was captain of the men’s team at Fairfield “U” his junior and senior years as well. He grew up racing motocross with his father and brother in New Jersey and competed until college (he recently has taken it up again).

Diana and Sean met, of course, at Fairfield University in 2001, on her first day of college. She was a freshman on the women’s tennis team and he was a junior on the men’s team. They were acquaintances for almost 2 years, but finally were able to spend a lot of time together during their Spring training in Arizona in March of 2003. When they returned they were inseparable and began dating shortly thereafter. Sean graduated a month later and moved back to N.J., but not for long. He was back visiting Diana four days later and quickly landed a job in Connecticut.

On June 13, 2009 Sean surprised Diana by proposing on a private catamaran sunset sail on Cape Cod, they bought their first home together in Fairfeld and are busy planning their wedding for July 2011 in Westport. Naturally our “e” session together, which could not have been more fun, covered all the bases, or should we say, all ends of the court, from their beautiful new home to the campus (and courts) of Fairfield U., to the beach nearby. Their story is one of love, laughter, and truly best friends. To this day their friends joke that it was a match made in heaven. I think we’ll all clearly have to agree. Can’t wait for their wedding next summer.

Not only did they take me to their favorite little country spot, we also had a chance to visit the famous “Bedford Oak” which, as the Town of Bedford describes it, “has stood as a symbol of the town’s strength, beauty and heritage, predating, some think, even the beginning of the town itself ( the year: 1680)”. Strength, beauty, heritage, what better symbols could there be to represent this wonderful couple’s soon to be new adventure. Excited to be part of it.

Discovering new (and old) NYC area destinations for me is always a treat. Our engagement sessions lend them themselves beautifully to the task.

From Dumbo (directly under the Manhattan Bridge overpass, for those not in the know) to Hoboken, Central Park to Battery Park, there’s never a lack of great locale, and never a photo session without the unexpected bringing something extra special to the mix.

And what could be more special than spending the afternoon exploring their Long Island City neighborhood with Julie and Adam. With their wedding plans set for Tappan Hill in October, and the mid-May weather at its finest, we walked and talked, got to know each other a bit better, and took (I think you’ll agree) some beautiful pictures together. More of the wonderful story of Julie and Adam, of course, to follow.

A few weeks ago, on a picture perfect early April day, I headed down to Jersey City, NJ to spend the afternoon with Allie and Justin, and their larger than life “best friend” Joey, exploring the streets of Jersey City, where they’re proud home owners, and Hoboken, just next door. And while we’d all met up at my place a month or two previously, Allie and I, in fact, go way back. Although I hadn’t seen her in many years, I’ve known her since she was a baby. Not only that, but I’d had the opportunity to photograph her many times when she was a little one.

Back “in the day”, when I was an advertising and magazine photographer with a studio in NYC, one of my long-time and most wonderful of clients was a kids’ fashion catalogue called Brights Creek. Allie’s dad and my good buddy Arnie was the Senior Product Manager and at its peak, we spent as many as forty days a year together taking pictures in the studio of the latest (in ’80′s) kids’ clothing. And while most of the kids were actually models, each of us managed to, at times, sneak in our own kids to the mix, including young and adorable Allie.

But enough about the past. A bit about Allie and Justin today, and how they first met. Allie’s best friend Andi went on the Birthright trip to Israel in July 2009. When she returned she told Allie that she met the perfect guy for her, that they had so much in common, both went to and loved Penn State, both were Jewish with close families, and that their personalities were extremely similar. Allie was finishing up her masters from Penn State, and Andi informed Allie that this “perfect guy” was going to be at the Penn State football game the last weekend of September. She gave Allie his number, she called and introduced herself, and asked him if he and his friends wanted to meet at a bar for a few drinks. They ended up doing just that, at a bar called “The G-Man”, and the two instantly clicked. They met a few times that same weekend at various bars and restaurants, and they’ve been together ever since. She would make the long drive from PSU to Jersey City, where Justin was already living, and he would make the same trip in reverse to see Allie. They were engaged on February 6th, 2010 on a skiing weekend at Hunter Mountain in Upstate New York and their wedding will be taking place on Memorial Day weekend 2011.

So while all my relationships with my brides and grooms is special and “personal” for me, once in awhile I have the unique opportunity to work with a couple with whom there’s already a long history, whether it was the fact that my dad had photographed their parents’ wedding, or that I’d had a personal long-standing friendship with the family, as in the case of Allie and hers. So its with great anticipation that I eagerly await the wedding of Allie and Justin next year and with great excitement that I share with you these pictures of our day spent on the streets of Jersey. Enjoy.
