As we’re all busy preparing for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving feastathon, what better time would there be to share this wonderful story that I had the opportunity to photograph for the very first issue of Moffly Publication’s Fairfield Living, featuring the farm to table brilliance of Chef Frederic Kiefer of Southport, Ct.’s new Artisan Restaurant in the Delamar Hotel. Not only did we get to follow the gracious and charming Chef Frederic around as he gathered the eggs from his personal backyard chicken coop and as he picked the fresh vegetables and herbs from his home garden, but once we’d told the story, we also got to sit and feast on his beautiful and scrumptuous creations.

Thanks to the truly talented team of art director Venera Alexandrova and our new friend and talented writer Carisha Swanson for including us in this premier issue of Moffly’s exciting new venture.

Their day jobs may range from a Vice President for Mastercard to a dairy farmer in Litchfield County, Connecticut, their passion and art from photography to sculpture and painting, but what they all have in common is that their art will be included in the Greenwich Arts Council’s “Art to the Avenue”, an art exhibit next month throughout the storefronts of Greenwich Avenue. To honor and bring attention to this event, Serendipity Magazine invited a group of judges (yours truly included) to choose their eight favorite pieces. It was then my total pleasure to get to meet and photograph each of these artists for inclusion in the April/May issue of “Serendipity”, now on the news stands. Make sure to catch this month of art and culture in Greenwich, when the Arts Council turns the streets into a “strolling gallery, alive with sculpture, painting, music and dance”. And, of course, do check out “Serendipity”.

Beautiful bride, handsome groom, gorgeous gown, incredible location, surrounded by adorable kids and bridesmaids. All the fixings for an exciting home wedding on the water in Connecticut.
But this “wedding day” was actually part one of a project that we were invited to collaborate on to produce a series of photographs showing off the exquisite bridal gowns and bridesmaids dresses designed by the wonderfully talented Coren Moore. The goal, simply to capture the spirit, the fun and the beauty of Coren’s latest collections, to be used on her new website and in magazine ads (including the current issue of Town and Country Weddings) as well as a means of introducing a new co-branding of Coren Moore with Vineyard Vines Custom Ties. And with Coren’s just released new website, I figured it was the perfect time to share some of these moments from our exciting shoot.

On one on-again, off-again rainy day this past summer we had the great pleasure to collaborate on a project with the multi-talented Jessica Malone, designer and event planner of Spark Group (who you’ve probably also heard me speak about as the creative inspiration behind the Christmas 2010 Macy’s Windows). On this most exciting and productive day of photography we were joined by by the equally talented Lisa and Debbie of Botanically Correct at the CV Ritch Mansion in White Plains (where we also happen to be photographing a wedding in April).

And now the really exciting news that we’re happy to share. The results of our efforts have just been published in the latest issue of Grace Ormonde’s Wedding Style Magazine, just hitting the news stands. Thought you’d enjoy this sneak peak. Always fun to see our work in print.

Today’s a rather special day for me. Twenty years ago (how hard that is to believe) October 9th, 1989, I woke up to find out that a photograph that I had been commissioned to take for Time Magazine was actually on that week’s cover. It was an interesting and eye opening
story about adopting babies and the costs involved, both financially and emotionally. And while I knew that the assignment, shot the previous month, was intended as a possible cover, I also knew that the way Time, Newsweek and all of the similar publications worked, was that the cover could easily be replaced with a late breaking news story, even as late as that weekend. So imagine the excitement when it actually hit the news stand on Monday.

Even before I headed to NYC all those years ago, even while still in art school, part of the dream we all had in addition to owning our own studios and making a living as photographers, was to be published in major national magazines. Not only was it an integral part of the career path towards developing advertising clients, but nothing was more gratifying personally than seeing your pictures in print. The dream for many was, of course, to travel the world shooting for National Geographic (still sounds great to me).

And while I dabbled for awhile, in the early years, shooting for various Conde Nast publications from Mademoiselle to Glamour and Self, when it first arrived on the scene, my own career trajectory took off in a rather different direction and, as many of you, know I started photographing lots of kids, for advertising, magazines and catalogs. Somehow, whether through luck and timing, perseverance or, as so many of the parents of my “models” use to say, having the “patience of a saint” (referring to me, of course), a career did flourish. With great teams of people beside me, we had the opportunity to work with a host of wonderful art directors and clients, some of whom I remain good friends with to this day. Key amongst these “crews” that we worked with was one very special lady and dear friend, who was a significant contributor to the Time cover that you see here. Joyce Whalen, to this day, is one of a select group of top stylists and yes, “baby wranglers” who not only knows every kid in the business and what his or her unique abilities are, but clearly is someone to whom the “patience of a saint” actually pertains
So thanks to Joyce for her years of helping make so many of our photos come to life on the printed page, and of course for her continued friendship.

And while there were other magazine covers and editorial spreads that came before the Time cover and others that followed, and while about ten years ago I chose to leave it all behind and, in a sense, return to my “roots” (thanks dad) and started photographing weddings and in turn the babies and families of my brides and grooms, the Time cover stands out as a significant milestone in my photography life and career and one that I think even the grandchildren, someday, might think was kind of cool. For me it was.

And one more thing. As excited as I was by having my photo on the cover, as was so often the case, I didn’t at the time think it was the best photo from the session. So I’ve included here what I think was clearly the better shot, which I’m happy to report later appeared on the cover of at least a couple of other significant publications.

Earlier this summer we were invited by the editors of New Canaan-Darien (Rowayton) Magazine to photograph a group of “real people” for their Fall fashion make-over stories.

Always a treat for me to be involved in any of the Moffly Publications’ photo shoots and this one in particular was very special because we were able to suggest our good friend and former bride Casey with her beautiful baby Reagan as models. And how exciting that they not only picked the two of them for their story but decided to put them on the September cover. But then again, how could they not! As a little side note, it’s always both fun and a bit nostalgic for me to get involved in beauty and fashion make-overs with “real” people. Some of my earliest assignments back in my days as a magazine and advertising photographer were to travel the country shooting make-overs for Mademoiselle and Glamour magazines. So once again, here we are with a bit of a full circle. But even better, in my own neighborhood.
